An interesting thought i just had. Are you old enough to remember a time when the only “Social Networks” where hanging out in the parking lot at the local Arcade, and when you where older, The “Let’s meet at [insert club name]”. I see my children, and their friends say things like, (when the power fails) What are we supposed to do? We can’t get on the internet?
I smile and say something like,”Well, use your imagination” A reply i once received was “Why?” Yes, it is funny to those of us who have not always had a computer and internet access. Their way of life differs so much than the way we all grew up. They play video games at home against millions of others, We played video games at an arcade with friends. They go to the movies to watch 3-D, we went to the “dollar theatre” to hang out. They go visit a friend through video chat, we physically went to a friends house. They use a home computer to study, we went to the library and used books. The difference is so profound when you stop and think about it.
How is that they know so much about another country? Simple, they actually have talked to some one from that country. What did we do? We went to the library to read a book on the country, still leaving with lingering questions. When we had a question or hypothesis, we had to study for hours writing down eveything. Remember when we had to take a 3×5 index card and write down bits of information along with a source, return home, write down our thoughts on it, go back to the library, or grab an encyclopedia and do this for weeks at a time just to get 21 pages for our teacher to write “C+ Student plagerized [this], did not complete [this]” . Now they just type it in, print it out and order it nicely, place it in a binder and the teacher gives them an “A+” for all the effort they put into it.
Kids today have their own language, my dad used to say we did back then, but now, they really have a different language. There is even sites on what the words mean, like:
ikr — I know Right hmu — hit me up and of course the all famous lol — laughing out loud, they use this one a lot, but i never actually hear or see them laughing out loud. Have they become so complacent that emotions are not even showing up in their mortal bodies? take the time to watch them, you’ll see what i mean.
They dream big, but they live bigger. Kids today think sitting at home and playing video games will get them a nice job later in life–the sad part is this is actually possible now. Though it is a very small possibility, it is still possible. In our day, we would not have dreamed of this scenerio. It is just rants and raves for me tonight, but i do find it very interesting how much things have changed in the last 30 to 40 years.
Take the time to sit back and watch todays generation. It will bewilder you in so many ways when you compare it to the life we had as teens and young adults. Todays generation has not known a time without Computers, Cell phones, Internet and High Definition Cable TV.
